Fundraising stories to inspire you If you are looking for more reasons to support our Mouth Cancer Action Appeal, then listen to a few people who already have and why they decided to. Sarah’s Skydive The inspiration for the skydive was mainly to help overcome my fear of heights and to see what I’m capable of. It turns out, I’m far more capable than I first thought, and it has spurred me on to keep challenging myself and venturing outside of my comfort zone. 500 Miles for Smiles I was chatting with my friend and colleague about doing something for charity and we got to talking about how my career started in Kirriemuir and how Brighton was about 500 miles away and it kicked off from there, 500 miles 4 smiles was born. Elaine’s Campaign The most memorable was giving disclosing tablets to check how well children are brushing their teeth in a booth at the Children’s’ Food Festival in Brighton dressed as a giraffe. This was a very odd experience for a retired RAF Officer! How your fundraising helps Our mouth cancer appeal aims to reduce the number of people who might have their life devastated by mouth cancer. By making a donation to our Mouth Cancer Action appeal you can help us raise awareness of the causes, signs and symptoms of mouth cancer so cases can be both prevented and caught early of enough for effective intervention. Your donation to our Mouth Cancer Action Appeal will go directly towards putting oral health information into the places that they are needed such as local pharmacies and doctor’s practices where those who are most at risk are most likely to see it and be influenced by it. Your support will also help us to continue our drive to change behaviours which contribute to the majority of mouth cancer cases in the UK, such as gender-neutral HPV vaccinations, minimum alcohol pricing and plain cigarette packaging. Please select a donation amount (required) £10 Allows us to provide information on the major signs and symptoms of mouth cancer to those most at risk of the disease. Smoking and drinking to excess are two of the major causes of mouth cancer and by making people aware of this we can help them catch cases early. £20 Will go a long way to ensure we can continue to campaign for mouth cancer action. We must reduce the number of lives lost to the disease - awareness and early diagnosis is key and your donation can help us achieve this. £50 Allows us to go out and visit somebody who has been diagnosed with mouth cancer. It is important for those diagnosed with mouth cancer that their voices are heard. Being able to have face-to-face contact offers them support and a chance to open up about their experiences. Quite often, those affected by mouth cancer have a determination to raise awareness of the disease so that it causes less harm to others and we want to help them achieve this.
